Researchers at BAE Systems’ Advanced Technology Centre in Bristol seem to have take a cue from Q’s play book, developing a new synthetic material that could be used to create special wall-climbing suits for soldiers and spies. The material is designed to mimic a gecko’s foot, which is covered with hairs so small that they form a bond with just about anything they touch, but can still be easily peeled off. In addition to human super-hero antics, the researchers say the material could also be used for wall-climbing robots. But the Brits aren’t the only geeks that have turned to geckos for inspiration. As you may remember, some peeps at Stanford recently managed to not only replicate a gecko’s sticky feet, but create a full-fledged geckobot.

To its defenders, Straight Edge is a mostly positive movement centered on the hard-core punk music scene, an outlet for creative, sometimes shy kids who are resisting the glorification of drugs and alcohol.

Officials from computer processor manufacturer Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) have confirmed rumors that the company will acquire graphics chip maker ATI Technologies in a cash and stock deal worth $5.4 billion.
The company indicated that the acquisition had been made in order to increase its presence in the commercial and mobile computing segments, as well as the consumer electronics market. The company now plans to market “customer-centric platforms” in 2007 using integrated technologies from both companies.

Although rumored since May of this year analysts had questioned the financial and strategic wisdom of AMD acquiring ATI outright. Additionally, the move could have important repercussions for the games industry, with the question of continued ATI support for Intel chipsets currently unclear. The ramifications for ATI rival NVidia’s support for AMD chipsets is also now in question. The acquisition though is not expected to have any effect on the use of ATI technology in the Xbox 360 and Wii - both of which use IBM PowerPC processors.

A jury convicted a man Friday of killing his father, stepmother and two stepsisters 17 years ago inside their church parsonage home so he could attend some high school prom events.

The St. Joseph County jury found Jeffrey Pelley, now 34, guilty on four counts of murder after deliberating more than 25 hours since Wednesday. Pelley faces up to 260 years in prison when he is sentenced Sept. 15.

Prosecutors accused Pelley, a high school senior at the time, of using a shotgun to kill his father, the Rev. Robert Pelley; stepmother, Dawn; and stepsisters, Janel, 8, and Jolene, 6, in April 1989 at their home next to the Olive Branch Church of the United Brethren in Lakeville, about 10 miles south of South Bend.

Investigators said Pelley was angry because his father had grounded him for stealing and would allow him to attend only the prom dance, causing him to miss a prom dinner, a bowling alley party and an outing the next day at an amusement park outside Chicago.

The aptly named “Breath Control Car” was designed to make the mastery of controlled breathing a bit more enjoyable, and he pulls it off by using a MIDI breath controller to channel puffs to a MAX/MSP. MIDI signals are converted to serial data, where those signals are beamed via Bluetooth to a PIC chip, and finally to a servo that directs the car. If all that sounds like hot air, here’s the deal: the harder you exhale, the harder it steers right, while softer breaths steer it left.

The forward and reverse functions are handled by a simple remote-control, presumably to avoid hyperventilation. An ex-California police officer accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a teenage boy in southern Nevada is being charged with intentionally transmitting the AIDS virus.

Shawn Michael Shelton, 39, is jailed in Las Vegas pending a Sept. 14 preliminary hearing on charges he kidnapped and sexually assaulted the boy May 21.

A criminal complaint filed in Las Vegas Justice Court said Shelton previously tested positive for HIV.

He’s accused of displaying a police badge, ordering the 14-year-old into his vehicle at a Las Vegas bus stop, and forcing the boy to perform oral sex.

Decatur police Tuesday arrested a man for allegedly masturbating in front of an employee at the Arby’s drive-through window.

According to the employee, Kenneth Michael Dobbs, 24, went through the drive-through in the nude June 21. He returned July 2 to place another indecent order with his pants around his ankles, said police Sgt. Steve Campbell.

The woman working the window told police she saw him masturbating on both occasions.
