You think your cat loves you? Drop kitty off at uncle Mikes house for a week. After three days it will forget all about you so long as it has its kibble and something to keep its mind on.

Do that to a long time family dog and it would ball its eyes out. Possibly break ol’ yellers heart. I could go on and on for months about this subject but that alone should state my case. Dogs have feelings, cats have instincts only for the most part. Not to mention many breeds of K9 can be amazing protectors.

Nearly six-in-ten (57%) of all adults in this country own a pet or pets of one kind or another, with dog owners (39% of all adults) outnumbering cat owners (23%) – and owners of all other pets trailing far behind, the Pew survey finds.

More whites (64%) than blacks (30%) or Hispanics (39%) have a pet. There is also an income skew to pet ownership: nearly seven-in-ten (69%) adults with an annual family income of $100,000 or more has a pet, compared with fewer than half (45%) of adults with an income below $30,000. Also, rural residents (65%) are more likely than suburbanites (57%) or city folks (51%) to have a pet — though, as noted above, they’re a bit less likely to consider their dogs or cats a member of the family.

Dogs may be known as man’s best friend, but for most of their owners, even that lavish sobriquet appears to undershoot the mark. Fully 85% of dog owners say they consider their pet to be a member of their family, according to a Pew Research Center survey.

And most cat owners (78%) feel the same way.

The pets-as-four-legged-family-member phenomenon helps explain everything from the heart-tugging scenes during Hurricane Katrina last fall, when some Gulf Coast residents risked staying home because they did not want to abandon their pets, to the explosive recent growth of the pet care industry. Americans spent an estimated $35.9 billion on their pets last year, up from $17 billon in 1994, according to the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association. Some of that money went for pet cosmetic surgery, pet insurance, pet strollers, pet waterbeds and, yes, pet spas and hotels. Brodie Pearsall is no any ordinary 10-year-old boy. At this tender age, which child can say they’ve had an entire police force after them?After showing off his new £10 (about R150) toy gun to his friends, in a matter of minutes he was surrounded by armed police.

Officers with dogs ordered Brodie to put down the 18in weapon, reports the Daily Mirror.

Shocked neighbours called the police after spotting the realistic-looking gun.

But Brodie’s mum Gail, of Cradley Heath, West Midlands, said: “Brodie was in tears. They were shouting at him instead of talking to me. I think the whole thing is ridiculous.”

The power of the Internet has saved more than 800 cats from being skinned and served up on Chinese dinner tables.

About 30 animal lovers rushed to a parking lot in Shanghai after reading an Internet posting sparked by animal rights activist Huo Puyang that said two trucks carrying cats in wooden boxes had been intercepted, Huo said on Monday.

Huo’s daughter-in-law had been looking for their missing pets and stumbled into the trucks, one of which sped away. The daughter-in-law called Huo, whose animal-loving friends then sent out an Internet alert last Friday.

The felines were on their way to the booming southern province of Guangdong, where some residents pride themselves as gourmets who will eat anything that flies, crawls or swims.

“It was a cruel sight … Pregnant cats and kittens were packed into the boxes,” Huo told Reuters.

“Many cats had died and smelled,” she said. “Some were trampled to death. Others bit each other.”

Huo also telephoned police, who took the driver and the truck to a police station.

Police said Huo had lacked evidence to prove the 42 boxes held stolen pets and told the animal lovers to buy the cats.

The driver demanded 14 yuan (91 pence) each.

After hours of haggling, the animal lovers paid more than 10,000 yuan for 840 cats.

“We have a difficult task. The cost of feeding them pales compared to medical fees, vaccines and sterilisation,” Huo said.

A former youth counselor was charged with sexual abuse of a juvenile after Antioch police discovered a runaway boy at her home.Antioch Police officers investigated reports that a 16-year-old male juvenile runaway may be hiding at 293 JoAnna Court, Apt. # 101. When police arrived at the apartment, Lori B. Zolno, 32, initially denied the boy was there.

Police then obtained consent to search Zolno’s apartment and found the juvenile hiding in a closet. The juvenile was confirmed a runaway and ward of the state. He was taken into police custody and later turned over to the Department of Children and Family Services.

Through further investigation, Antioch Police officers learned Zolno had been recently terminated from her job at The Gateway Foundation in Lake Villa, IL where she had been the juvenile’s counselor.

The Gateway Foundation offers substance abuse treatment and cognitive self-change services for adults and adolescents.

Zolno admitted to having a sexual relationship with the juvenile during his stay at her apartment over the past several weeks.

A former elementary school teacher who posted photographs of children who died in traffic accidents on his Web site without permission from their families was handed a suspended prison sentence and put under probation in a ruling at the Tokyo District Court on Thursday.The former teacher, Toshio Watanabe, 34, was sentenced to 2 1/2 years’ imprisonment, suspended for five years with probation, after being convicted of crimes including violating Japan’s Copyright Law.

In handing down the ruling, presiding judge Osamu Iguchi heavily criticized the 34-year-old’s actions.

“He trampled on the sentiments of bereaved families,” Iguchi said. The ruling pointed out that Watanabe had posted many photographs of corpses on his site along with sexually suggestive comments, and that he had not responded to calls to shut the site down.

“He took the attitude of stopping at nothing to satisfy his sexual predilections and interests, and there is no room for lenience in consideration of his motives,” the ruling said. Referring to the fact that Watanabe was an elementary school teacher at the time, the court said, “He acted outrageously in a way that completely went against his professional responsibility. He damaged trust in educators.”

A 70-year-old day-care provider known as “Uncle Jack” is accused of sexually abusing three girls ages 4 to 9 both inside an at-home Fairhaven facility and while driving the girls home, police said.”

Fairhaven police yesterday arrested Jack Sylvia, 70, of Fall River, and he was arraigned on five counts of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14. Sylvia was ordered held on $10,000 bail.

Bristol County District Attorney spokesman Gregg Miliote and police said much of the alleged abuse was inappropriate touching that happened in the back of the day-care facility’s van while Sylvia was driving the girls home.

“He called it fluffing in the police report,” said Miliote. “That’s a direct quote from the report. He would ‘fluff’ their rear ends and rub their legs.”

Police said the alleged abuse came to light last month when the mother of two of the children contacted the authorities with the girls’ disturbing stories. A third alleged victim surfaced not long after, police said.
Department of Social Services spokeswoman Denise Monteiro said Sylvia had passed a background check, which found no criminal record. She said the Day Time Friends Day Care is an at-home facility that under law can care for no more than six children.

Authorities tracked down a 4-year-old girl who called 911 nearly 300 times last month by offering to deliver McDonald’s to her suburban Chicago apartment.

Unbeknownst to her mother, the girl used a deactivated cell phone to call dispatchers 287 times in June—sometimes as often as 20 times a shift.

Dispatchers heard the child’s voice but could only track the phone’s signal to the apartment complex.

So authorities used a ruse to pinpoint her.

“We asked (the caller) what she wanted. She said she wanted McDonald’s,” said Steve Cordes, executive director of QuadCom’s emergency center, which covers Carpentersville.

“We talked with her and we convinced her if she told us where she lives, we would bring her McDonald’s,” he said. “She finally gave us her address. So we sent the police over—with no McDonald’s.”

A Sherborn teen was charged this afternoon with allegedly having sex with sheep at a farm near his home, a pattern police suggest may have gone on for nearly a year.

Roger Henderson II, 18, was charged today in Natick District Court with bestiality, cruelty to animals and breaking and entering in connection with an incident police say took place on June 27.

Following his arraignment, he was released to his parents on the condition that he stay at least 30 yards away from Boggastow Farm, where the alleged bestiality took place, and animals in general. Henderson was also ordered to continue mental health treatments at Leonard Morse hospital in Natick.

According to police reports, the incident at the farm last month was just the latest in at least a dozen break-ins. Prompted by the earlier incidents, the owner of the farm installed surveillance cameras, including one near the sheep pen.

Between 3 and 4 a.m. on June 27, the police report says, the camera captured and filmed a person identified as Roger Henderson II.

“Henderson is observed in sheep pen grabbing a sheep by its hind legs and dragging it to the corner of the stall. Henderson removes his clothes and appears to have sexual relations with the sheep. Upon finishing, Henderson puts his pants back on and leaves the barn area with his shirt in his hand.”

Two teenagers were accused of gang raping a woman and forcing her 12-year-old son to join in the attack, then beating him and pouring cleaning solution into his eyes.Authorities allege Avion Lawson, 14, and Nathan Walker, 16, were among a group of about 10 masked suspects who forced their way into the woman’s apartment in a crime-ridden housing project the night of June 18.

The two were being held without bail Friday on suspicion of armed sexual battery by multiple perpetrators, sexual performance by a child, armed home invasion and aggravated battery. Both were arrested this week, but formal charges had not been filed. Authorities said the two would be charged as adults.

“Any rape case is horrible but this takes it to another level, something you can’t think of even in your worst dreams,” police spokesman Ted White said.

According to the police report, a man knocked on the woman’s door at about 9 p.m. and told her he had a flat tire. The mother and son, whom police have not identified, went outside and were ambushed by a group of gun-wielding suspects.

The victims told police they were forced back into their home and beaten and sexually assaulted. According to authorities, the men raped, sodomized and beat the woman, then forced her son to participate in the assault at gunpoint, making him have sex with his mother in front of them.

The boy was then beaten and had numerous household cleaning liquids poured into his eyes, according to the police report.

The suspects also stole a few hundred dollars worth of cash and jewelry, White said.

White said more arrests were expected, but he would not say whether authorities had identified additional suspects. The teens in custody were not cooperating, but Lawson confessed to taking part in the attack, White said. Walker has denied involvement, White said.

DNA evidence in a condom found in the victims’ home linked Lawson to the crime, police said. Investigators also say they found a palm print belonging to Walker at the scene.

The victims did not suffer life-threatening injuries and have been released from the hospital, White said.

“They’re going through the county victim services for counseling,” he said.Lawson lived in Dunbar Village, the hardscrabble project where the attack occurred. Walker was apparently visiting a friend there, White said.
