Authorities said this morning a New Hartford police officer was shot and killed Monday night while pursuing a suspect in the robbery of a New Hartford jewelry store.
Police said Joseph Corr, 30, a six-year department veteran, was shot while pursuing a suspect who fled on foot after a car chase ended with the suspect’s vehicle crashing into a gas pump at the Byrne Dairy of Route 5.
The car chase followed the reported robbery of the Lennon’s-W.B. Wilcox jewelry store on Commercial Drive in New Hartford Monday evening.
Update: One of two suspects identified in the robbery of a Commercial Drive jewelry store and the fatal shooting of a town police officer pleaded not guilty to a murder charge this afternoon in Town Court.
John T. Healy, 46, of the Bronx, pleaded not guilty to one count of second-degree murder and was returned to the Oneida County jail without bail.
Police are still seeking the man they believed fatally gunned down Corr behind the Byrne Dairy on Route 5 in Kirkland after a car chase that began at the Lennon’s-W.B. Wilcox jewelry store on Commercial Drive and ended when the suspects’ car crashed into a gas pump at the convenience store. Walter R. Richardson, 36, reportedly escaped a manhunt by car-jacking a Kirkland Automotive tow truck that was found today in Allentown, Pa. Police say they believe Richardson is now in the Philadelphia area.
