A North Toledo woman is accused of having sex with her adult son on a regular basis for years, including acts that were witnessed by a 7-year-old girl her son is accused of raping, authorities said.

Terry Walker, who was indicted yesterday by a Lucas County grand jury for sexual battery, is the mother of Kevin Ware, who was indicted this month on three counts of rape.

Mr. Ware, 28, is charged with the three counts for three different sex acts, each of which Toledo police said Mr. Ware committed with the girl April 4.

Police said during their investigation of the rape charges, they found Ms. Walker and Mr. Ware have been having sex for years in the apartment they share at 3517 East Manhattan Blvd.

Toledo police Sgt. Sam Harris, head of the special victims unit, said police are reviewing cell phone and computer records they seized.

Police say a 50-year-old man living in his mother’s home killed a transvestite prostitute with a garden hoe after bringing him back to the house, police said Wednesday.

John Freeman of Northridge was arrested Sunday on suspicion of murder.

Freeman’s mother was out of town when he allegedly picked up the 31-year-old transvestite prostitute Sunday morning and brought him to his mother’s house in the 19000 block of Kingsbury Road.

The victim wore women’s clothing to Freeman’s house but was naked at the time of the beating, police said.

The two apparently began arguing inside the house and ended up in the backyard, where Freeman allegedly attacked the victim with his fists, feet and a hoe.

A 62-year-old woman was sentenced to three years in prison for locking her grandson inside a dog kennel every night for three years while she went to work as a jail counselor.

Under a plea bargain, June Candelario was also sentenced Friday to one year of probation.

“I cannot imagine any society that would say it is just and fair to inflict this harm on a child that cannot protect himself,” Adams County District Court Judge Harlan Bockman said.

Candelario, a former state trooper, put the boy in a 4 foot by 3 foot (1.2 by 1 meter) kennel each day at 4 p.m. and let him out hours later when she returned from work, authorities said.

She pleaded guilty to one felony count of conspiracy to commit child abuse that resulted in bodily harm and a misdemeanor count of child abuse.

A Texas mother who claims the family dog tore off her baby son’s genitals has been arrested and accused of mutilating the boy herself with a sharp instrument.

Katherine Nadal is now awaiting a court hearing on custody of the boy. She has been charged with injury to a child and is being held on $100,000 bail.

Child-welfare authorities said she told social workers she woke up from a nap in March to find that her small dachshund had attacked her son. But police said a veterinarian and a doctor have agreed the dog did not cause the injuries.

A 10-year-old boy was convicted Thursday in the beating of a homeless Army veteran that left the man so severely injured he required reconstructive surgery.

Prosecutors say the boy, another 10-year-old and Jeremy Woods, 17, ganged up on John D’Amico, 58, as he and a friend walked through a Daytona Beach neighborhood on March 27. The older man was beaten and stoned with a concrete block.

Circuit Judge John Watson found the boy guilty of aggravated battery and set sentencing for May 24.

The boy, who appeared in court in shackles and an oversized jumpsuit, could be held in the juvenile system until he turns 21 if the judge considers him a habitual offender, or he could be given probation or counseling.

A sixth-grader stabbed to death a mother duck and two ducklings that had nested near a school, distressing the other children and alarming officials who said the boy needs mental health treatment.

Students at Wilbur Middle School had named the mother duck Lucy and were monitoring her and her brood, making sure no one disturbed the nest in a grassy creek bed. Their mutilated bodies — stabbed with a pencil — were found this week.

An announcement over the public address system led the boy to admit the killings, officials said. They said he had also talked about the act to classmates and didn’t understand why it was wrong.

The boy, whose name was not released, was suspended Wednesday. His return to the school will hinge on a hearing.

School officials were responding “the way we do whenever we believe that a child might be a risk to himself or others,” said Liz McGinness, who coordinates the district’s mental health crisis team.

She said his parents were being told they must seek outside mental health care. “We really don’t mince words on this,” she said. “We know that animal cruelty is a very serious, significant behavior.”

No decision has been made on possible criminal charges. Killing mallard ducks is illegal this time of year, and even in hunting season, the way they were killed would be illegal, officials said.

Mark Rankin, assistant director of law enforcement for the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, said the boy may not be charged because of his age. A hunting violation charge could bring an adult up to seven days in jail and a $250 fine, while animal cruelty carries up to a year in jail and $10,000 in fines, he said.

A 6-year-old boy stayed in an apartment with the body of his father for two days after the man died on their sofa, obeying instructions to never leave without permission, firefighters said.

The boy, whose name was not released, didn’t want to leave even after firefighters arrived, fearing punishment if he left, fire department Maj. Noble Lee said.

“He wasn’t as distraught as one might think,” Lee said. “I don’t think he understands the gravity of the past few days. He wasn’t as upset at the situation as he was about being outside the residence without permission.”

His father, Kevin Dale Judd, 52, appears to have died of natural causes, authorities said. The body was found late Monday after neighbors and a maintenance man reported a foul odor, Lee said.

According to a police report, the boy told police his father had been feeling ill and laid down. The boy left the room to watch television, and when he returned his father was slumped over.

The boy did not know to call 911 in case of an emergency, said Department of Human Services spokesman George Earl Johnson Jr. He apparently had not eaten in two days but refused food and water offered by firefighters and paramedics, Lee said.

Johnson said the boy will remain in DHS custody until relatives are found to care for him.

Witnesses say a woman repeatedly abused her 14-year-old and 5-year-old daughters, tying them to a bed without food or water, forcing them to eat toilet tissue with dog feces on it, and making the youngest sleep in a dog crate, authorities said Friday.

Penny Lea Holloway, 42, of Broken Arrow also allegedly forced one of her children to take anti-psychotic medication and left the pair alone for days on end, according to reports.

Holloway, who was arrested Thursday night at her home in the 8500 block of South 193rd East Avenue, was moved from Broken Arrow to the Wagoner County jail on Friday. She is charged with four counts of child abuse.

“These children are telling us these outlandish stories, (but) we found evidence in the home which corroborates what they said,” Broken Arrow Police Maj. Mark Irwin said. “The victims say it’s been going on for years.”

Police rescued the children Tuesday night after a tip from a family friend, authorities said. The 14-year-old girl then told investigators that Holloway, their natural mother, put them through various types of physical and emotional abuse, according to a probable cause affidavit.
